A PIR sensor (Passive Infrared Sensor) is a passive infrared sensor that detects changes in infrared heat radiation from its surroundings. Unlike an IR LED, a PIR sensor does not emit any infrared light but only detects infrared radiation reaching the sensor.
The PIR sensor contains a pyroelectric sensing element that responds to changes in incident infrared radiation. People and other warm objects emit infrared heat radiation, and when such an object moves through the sensor's field of view, it causes a change that can be detected. PIR sensors are therefore primarily used for motion detection.
To create a larger and segmented detection area, a PIR sensor is often used together with a Fresnel lens. The lens divides the field of view into multiple zones, allowing movement between the zones to produce distinct changes in the infrared radiation reaching the sensing element.
Typical applications include motion detectors, burglar alarms, automatic lighting, occupancy detection, and energy management in buildings.
The advantage of PIR sensors is that they can detect movement from people and other warm objects without emitting a signal themselves.
