An IR receiver module is an integrated light sensor designed to receive modulated infrared signals. Unlike a standard photodiode or phototransistor, the module contains both a light-sensitive detector and electronics for amplification, filtering, and demodulation of the received IR signal.
IR receiver modules are normally designed for a specific carrier frequency, such as 38 kHz. This allows the module to distinguish the modulated IR signal from ambient light and other optical interference. The received signal is internally demodulated and provided as a digital output signal that can easily be read by, for example, a microcontroller.
IR receiver modules are primarily used to receive signals from IR remote controls, but can also be used in other systems for wireless transmission of digital information using infrared light.
The advantage compared with a separate photodiode or phototransistor is that amplification, filtering, and demodulation are already integrated into the component. This provides a simple and interference-resistant solution for receiving modulated IR signals.
