Tantalum capacitors use an oxide layer of tantalum as the dielectric. The very thin dielectric layer provides high capacitance relative to the component size as well as good performance at higher frequencies.
One advantage of tantalum capacitors is that they have lower ESR (equivalent series resistance) and lower leakage current than electrolytic capacitors. They offer high capacitance relative to the component size as well as good long-term stability.
Disadvantages include limited tolerance to high current pulses and relatively low rated voltage, often up to around 35 V. In addition, they are usually more expensive than aluminum electrolytic capacitors. They are sensitive to incorrect polarity or exceeded rated voltage.
An important thing to note is that tantalum capacitors are commonly marked on the positive terminal, not the negative.
