A switching regulator is a component that regulates a voltage to a fixed or adjustable level. Unlike a linear voltage regulator, the switching regulator operates at a switching frequency. It requires more external components than a linear regulator, such as an inductor, diode, and capacitors. Switching regulators typically offer high efficiency, resulting in low heat dissipation—sometimes none at all.
Note that in certain applications, such as audio, a switching frequency that is too low can cause interference or unwanted noise.
