Modulino - Qwiic modules
What is Modulino?
Arduino has named its Qwiic modules Modulino. But what is Qwiic? It is a modular connection system developed by SparkFun to simplify the connection of I²C-based sensors, control boards and other components.
Qwiic is based on a standardised 4-pin JST SH connector with 1.0 mm pitch, allowing for fast and accurate connection without the need for soldering or jumper cables.
All Qwiic compatible modules operate at 3.3 V logic level. If a different voltage is required (e.g. 1.8 V or 5 V), the module must include its own/integrated level conversion to ensure compatibility with the 3.3 V I²C bus.
To ensure compatibility between different manufacturers (e.g. Arduino, Sparkfun, Adafruit, Electrokit, etc.) and reduce the risk of faulty connections, the Qwiic system follows a fixed pinout and colour coding:
- GND (ground): Black
- 3.3 V (power supply): Red
- SDA (data): Blue
- SCL (clock): Yellow
Advantages of Qwiic
- Fast prototyping: Allows quick and easy connection of modules without soldering.
- Reduced risk of errors: Standardised connectors and colour coding minimise the risk of incorrect connections.
- Scalability: Ability to daisy-chain multiple modules
- Broad ecosystem: Support from multiple manufacturers with access to a wide range of compatible modules and sensors.
