Mica capacitors (or silver-mica capacitors) use the mineral mica as a dielectric material. The result is high accuracy and very stable performance with low tolerances, typically ±1%. Mica capacitors also have excellent high-frequency properties with low losses. The capacitance is stable both over temperature and time.
The excellent insulation properties of the mineral means that mica capacitors typically have high voltage ratings, often 500V or more. They are normally manufactured in small capacitance values, from one pF up to a few nF. Mica capacitors are used in e.g. RF circuits, filters and oscillators – circuits where stability is highly important. In particular, this applies to high-powered applications, where the high temperatures and voltages render film capacitors unsuitable.
