A thyristor, or SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier), is a semiconductor device that functions as a controllable rectifier. It consists of four layers of semiconductor material (PNPN structure) and has three terminals: anode, cathode, and gate.
The thyristor conducts current from the anode to the cathode when it is in the forward-biased state and a control signal is applied to the gate. Once the thyristor starts conducting, it remains in the conducting state even if the gate signal is removed, as long as the current does not drop below a certain holding current.
Thyristors are mainly used in applications where control of higher currents and voltages is required, such as in rectifiers, power regulation, motor control, and voltage regulators. The component is suitable for circuits where controlled turn-on but non-controlled turn-off is desired
