A triac (Triode for Alternating Current) is a semiconductor device used for controlling alternating current (AC). Unlike a thyristor, which can only conduct current in one direction, a triac can conduct in both directions when activated. It has three terminals: MT1 (Main Terminal 1), MT2 (Main Terminal 2), and gate.
When a sufficient control signal is applied to the gate, the triac begins to conduct current during both the positive and negative half-cycles of the AC voltage. It remains conducting until the current through the device drops below a certain threshold value, known as the holding current.
Triacs are commonly used in applications such as light dimming, motor speed control, fan speed regulation, heating control, and other areas where efficient control of AC power is required.
