A Schottky diode has several advantages compared to a conventional PN diode. It has a lower forward voltage drop, typically around 0.2 to 0.4 V instead of approximately 0.6 to 0.7 V. This results in lower power losses. Another advantage is very fast switching. This makes them suitable for high frequencies and fast pulse transitions, for example in DC-DC converters and switched-mode power supplies.
