A TVS diode (Transient Voltage Suppressor diode) is used to protect electronic circuits from fast and short overvoltage pulses, such as those caused by ESD, lightning strikes, induced transients in wiring, or disturbances from switching loads. It is typically placed in parallel with the circuit that needs protection. When the voltage exceeds its breakdown voltage, the TVS diode quickly enters a conductive state and diverts current to ground. It clamps the voltage to a safe level, protecting sensitive components in the circuit from damage. Once the transient has passed, the diode automatically returns to its normal non-conductive state and can be used again.
