A reed switch, also known as a magnetic switch, is a passive electrical switch that is activated by a magnetic field, typically from a permanent magnet. It consists of two thin metal blades (reeds) enclosed in a glass tube filled with inert gas. When a magnetic field is applied, the blades are drawn together and close the circuit, allowing current to flow. When the magnetic field is removed, the circuit opens again.
Examples of applications include security systems for alarms triggered by the opening of doors, windows, or hatches, position and end-of-travel sensors in mechanical systems, as well as level switches in containers where a magnet-equipped float closes or opens the element at different liquid levels.
