Product description

Lo-Fi Noise Machine is based on the classic "Atari Punk Console" synthesizer circuit, but has been modernised with several improvements. With an easy-to-medium difficulty level, this soldering kit teaches the fundamentals of analogue sound generation using the classic 556 timer IC and a voltage boost circuit. It is ideal for musicians, sound designers, and electronics enthusiasts who want to build an analogue synthesizer that generates lo-fi square waves without any digital signal processing.

The synthesizer is built around a 556 timer IC with an integrated voltage boost circuit and generates analogue square waves with real-time pitch and pulse width adjustment using two potentiometers. Three audio outputs can be selected using jumpers: a built-in buzzer for immediate sound output, a connection for the included 8-ohm speaker, or a 3.5 mm headphone jack (which can also be connected to an amplifier or mixing console). The circuit also features a push button for rhythmic on/off triggering of the sound, or alternatively a jumper can be fitted for continuous operation. A capacitive "Glitch" touch pad alters the sound when touched, while an LED flashes in sync with the generated audio signal.

The kit combines musical creativity with an understanding of advanced analogue electronics, teaching the principles of analogue sound generation while producing a fully functional instrument. The open-source hardware design is complemented by detailed documentation explaining how the voltage boost circuit, timer oscillator, and signal modification work together to create sound. The comprehensive assembly guide covers both soldering techniques and the theory behind analogue synthesis, making advanced concepts easier to understand for users with limited prior experience.
