Passive Piezo Buzzer
A passive piezo buzzer contains only a piezoelectric transducer and has no built-in oscillator. It must therefore be driven by an alternating signal to produce sound, for example a square wave (PWM) from a microcontroller or an external oscillator. Applying a DC voltage will normally only produce a brief click when the voltage is connected or disconnected.
Piezoelectric transducer
A piezoelectric transducer converts mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice versa through the piezoelectric effect. This allows it to be used both as a speaker (buzzer) and as a sensor.

- Buzzer and audible indicators in electronic equipment
- Tone and melody generators using microcontrollers
- Knock sensors and vibration detectors
- Shock and motion detection
- Triggers for electronic drums
- Contact microphones for acoustic instruments
- Simple microphones and sound sensors
