Passive piezo buzzer with connection leads. A passive piezo buzzer contains only a piezoelectric element (transducer) and has no built-in oscillator. It must therefore be driven by an alternating signal to produce sound, for example a square wave (PWM) from a microcontroller or an external oscillator. Applying a DC voltage will normally produce only a short click when the voltage is switched on or off. A piezoelectric element converts mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice versa through the piezoelectric effect. A piezoelectric element can therefore be used both as a loudspeaker (buzzer) and as a sensor.
The piezo buzzer has a resonant frequency of 4 kHz, which means it produces its highest sound output in that frequency range. At a drive voltage of 5 Vp-p and 4 kHz, it produces a sound level of at least 75 dB, measured at a distance of 10 cm.
