Product description
Lightning detector based on the AMS OSRAM AS3935 Franklin Lightning Sensor. The module can detect lightning strikes at distances of up to 40 km and is suitable for weather stations, environmental monitoring, and other projects where early thunderstorm detection is desired. Communication is via SPI, making it compatible with a wide range of microcontroller platforms.
The AS3935 uses a 500 kHz tuned antenna to detect both cloud-to-ground and cloud-to-cloud lightning. The sensor estimates the distance to the storm with 1 km resolution across 14 distance levels. Its built-in noise rejection algorithm helps reduce false detections caused by electrical interference. The sensor can also be configured through the accompanying Arduino library, allowing adjustment of parameters such as sensitivity, noise level, and the number of lightning events required before an interrupt is generated.
