2N2222 is an NPN transistor in TO-18 package. Used for amplification or as a switch. Suitable replacement for the BC5xx series, when you need more current than they can deliver. The 2N2222 is similar in most respects, but partly due to its metal case can handle 800mA.
Often paired with its complement, the 2N2907 PNP transistor.
An intermediate between the 2N2222 and the BC5xx series is the TO92 variant of the 2N2222, which can handle up to 500mA.
